What to Expect at an Initial Consultation
We understand that visiting an osteopath for the first time can feel unfamiliar. Our aim is to make your appointment as comfortable, informative and reassuring as possible. From the moment you arrive, we’ll take the time to understand your concerns and develop a treatment plan that’s tailored to you.
01
We’ll Discuss Your Health and Symptoms
Your appointment begins with a detailed conversation about your current
symptoms, your medical history, lifestyle, occupation and any activities that
may be contributing to your discomfort. We’ll also discuss your goals for
treatment and answer any questions you may have.
02
A Comprehensive Assessment
Your physical assessment aims to better understand how your body is
moving. This may include observing your posture, assessing your range of
movement, testing the affected area and examining other parts of the body
that may be contributing to your symptoms.
Depending on the area being assessed, you may be asked to remove some
outer clothing. You are welcome to wear comfortable clothing and your privacy
and dignity will always be respected throughout the consultation.
03
Diagnosis and Treatment Plan
Once your assessment is complete, we’ll explain our findings in clear,
straightforward language. We’ll discuss what may be causing your symptoms,
outline your treatment options and recommend a personalised plan based on
your needs and goals.
If osteopathic treatment is not the most appropriate option for your condition,
we will explain why and advise you on the next steps or refer you to another
healthcare professional where necessary.

04
Hands-On Treatment
Treatment may begin during your first appointment. Your osteopath will use
techniques that are suitable for your condition and comfort level, which may
include:
- Soft tissue massage
- Joint mobilisation
- Gentle stretching
- Articulation techniques
- Spinal or joint manipulation
Your osteopath will explain each technique before treatment and answer any
questions you may have.
05
Advice and Self-Management
Your consultation doesn’t end with hands-on treatment. You will receive
practical advice to help support your recovery, which may include exercises,
posture and workplace guidance, activity modification or lifestyle
recommendations designed to help you manage your symptoms and reduce
the risk of recurrence.
06
How Long Does the Appointment Take?
An initial consultation typically lasts up to 60 minutes. This allows enough time
to complete a detailed assessment, discuss your diagnosis, answer your
questions and begin treatment if appropriate.
